ABOUT
John Rinella:
Community, Exerience and Committment to Whitby
Whitby has been my home for most of my life. My family moved here when I was about 14, just as I was starting high school, and I have called this community home ever since. Today, I am proud to live here with my beautiful wife, Colleen, our two boys, Lucas and Declan, and, of course, Phoebe the dog and Link the cat.
I also understand what it means to work hard, build something of your own and sometimes wonder whether you are making the right decisions for your family. I own and operate a small business installing and monitoring security systems throughout Whitby. That experience has taught me the importance of listening, earning people's trust and being there when people need you. My family and my faith have always grounded me and given me the confidence to take the next step forward.
In 2014, I asked the people of Whitby to put their trust in me as their Durham Catholic District School Board Trustee. For the past eight years, I have had the privilege of serving our community, always putting students and families first. I was also honoured to serve as Chair of the Board for two of those years. That experience taught me how to bring people together, listen to different perspectives, find common ground and lead with accountability — skills I will bring to Whitby Town Council.
Today, my family is at a different stage. Our boys are older, and with Colleen working from home, I am able to dedicate the time and energy this community deserves from its local councillor. I am ready to take the experience I have gained in business, education and public service and put it to work for the residents of Whitby.
I believe Whitby can grow without losing what makes it special. Development is part of our future, but growth must be properly planned. We need to protect our greenspaces, preserve the character of our neighbourhoods and make sure infrastructure keeps pace with new development. We cannot simply react to growth after the decisions have been made — we need to plan ahead and make sure residents have a meaningful voice.
Most importantly, I believe government should be accessible and accountable to the people it serves. Residents deserve transparency about what their council is doing and why decisions are being made. As your councillor, I will hold regular community meetings, keep residents informed and make myself accessible. I already put my personal phone number on my handouts and website because I believe elected representatives should never be afraid to hear directly from the people they represent — even when the conversation is difficult.
I am not running to be a councillor who is difficult to reach. I am running to be a councillor who is there.
I will knock on your door, listen to your concerns, stand up for our community and work to bring people together. You should always know what is happening at Town Hall, where I stand and, most importantly, who you can call when you need help.
I have called Whitby home for most of my life. Now I am ready to put my experience, my time and my commitment to work for the community I love.
